Why try Chicory Coffee ?

It’s time to starting weaning yourself off coffee and you’re curious about tea because of all the health benefits you’ve heard.

Maybe you like tea and just want to transition more into a daily tea habit. Excellent idea.

OR you’ve reach a point in your relationship with your Coffee where it's not quite treating you the way you feel it should. *cue sad breakup music*

Many of my friends who I've introduced this recipe duo to are now big fans of chicory root tea simply because they like the taste. They tell me that it reminds them of cozy camping trips in a cabin—or your version of that!

What’s Chicory? Why drink it?

Chicory comes from the chicory plant. Its roots are roasted, ground and brewed, revealing a bold, earthy brew similar in taste profile to coffee. It’s an herbal tisane and is caffeine-free. It can function as a medical herb and historically was used as a coffee extender/replacement during times of war or whenever people experienced coffee supply shortages. In addition to its nice earthy and dark cacao flavor, it also contains a prebiotic fiber called inulin which helps support a healthy gut biome. It helps me cut down on the harshness of coffee on my stomach for sure! Adding this to your coffee or drinking it alone also means you’re adding small amounts of nutrients and minerals to your diet such as beta-carotene, manganese, vitamin B6 and more. As with any new herbal addition to your diet, don’t overdo it at first, and observe how each serving makes your body feel after consumption. I’m not a doctor, but I do try and always listen to my own body as it reveals more information than you may think.

    Brew suggestion

    For about every 8 oz. serving of filtered water (a standard mug), start your Chicory Coffee adventure by substituting half the amount of coffee you usually use:

    1 TBL Coffee + 1 TBL Chicory

    A coffee maker, French press, and however else you make coffee works well. This will introduce a new dark earthiness to your coffee. Play around with the ratio of coffee to chicory to suit your own taste. A little chicory goes a long way. Chicory itself can be brewed more than once.

    Instructions:

    Just brew as you normally would with your coffee. Baristas recommend a 3.5 min brew time for coffee, but with any herbal tea or root, you can extend the brew time up to 10 minutes. Do what tastes good for you. I’ve had good results with multiple kinds of brew times.

    Cozy Additions

    My favorite cozy addition to this Chicory coffee blend is CINNAMON. Add a dash to the brew to start and adjust to taste. For cold weather days, I may go as far as adding some other spices such as a pinch of ground clover and/or nutmeg. Switch it up to keep things exciting! Routine is timeless too. ;)
